Cafeteria Waste Reduction

Cafeteria Waste Reduction

31
Oregon high schools with Climate Education curriculum, thanks to Our Future students.

Overview

The Cafeteria Waste Reduction team works to create materials, events, and initiatives that support schools in reducing cafeteria waste. This can include efforts like implementing industrial composting, reducing or eliminating plastics or other disposables from the cafeteria, installing water bottle filling stations, introducing share tables, and many more projects.

How Your School Can Get Involved

Creating Waste Reduction System Improvement Plans

  • Our CWR Regional Leaders can work with your school’s Green Team/Eco Club (or even just a few dedicated students!) to develop waste reduction/management plans to advance through these tiers:
    • Tier 1: Schools who have little to no waste reduction initiatives currently in place. Suggested projects:

  • Tier 2: Schools who may have minimal waste reduction initiatives such as recycling or a share table, but most food or utensils wind up in the trash and there is very little awareness or educational materials. Suggested projects:

  • Tier 3: Schools who have some initiatives already in place (educational signage, industrial composting, reduced disposables, etc), but want to take it to the next level of waste reduction! Suggested projects:

Other Opportunities to Get Involved

Global Food Waste Prevention Week (FWPW): September 28th - October 4th, 2026

In April 2025, Our Future’s CWR Team created a series of engagement opportunities for schools to participate in Food Waste Prevention Week. Even though the next official FWPW isn’t until September 2026, we have a series of suggested activities for your school to create its own Food Waste Prevention Week! Click here for a list of activities and associated resources.

Plastics Free Lunch Day:

Every April and November, there is a Plastics Free Lunch Day

Schools can choose how to plan for their day, depending on what works with administration and how far along their school is in waste reduction efforts

Schools can eliminate one or multiple single use plastics in the cafeteria, provide single use plastics by request, write letters to the district, carry out a before and after plastic waste audit

"I've been able to connect Our Future projects with the environmental club at my school and have enjoyed seeing tangible results from our work, such as students supporting a bill and a compost system being implemented at our school."
